October may be the best-kept secret of the Provençal calendar. The fierce heat of August is gone, the light turns long and golden, and the sea — slow to cool — still takes a swim on a fine day. The crowds have thinned, the prices have eased, and the vineyards and olive groves are at their busiest of the year.

## I. The weather and the sea

Expect warm, bright days through much of the month — often 18–23 °C on the coast — cooling in the evenings, with the first proper rains usually arriving late October. The sea is at its warmest of the shoulder season early in the month; by the end it is for the brave. Pack for layers: shirtsleeves by day, a jacket after dark, and something for one wet afternoon.

## II. The harvest and what’s on

October is harvest country. The grape **vendange** finishes early in the month and the new wine is celebrated across Provence and the Languedoc; the **olive harvest** begins as it ends. It is the ideal month for a wine tour, a market morning, or a long lunch on a terrace still warm enough to sit out. Most museums, gardens and sites keep summer hours into mid-month.

## III. Where to go

For warmth and colour, base yourself inland in **Provence** — the Luberon, the Alpilles, the vineyards around the Ventoux — where the autumn light is at its best. The **Côte d’Azur** stays mild and far quieter than in summer; **Nice**, **Menton** and the Riviera villages are a pleasure in October. Avoid only the very end of the month if you want reliably dry weather.
